NASA-licensed DNAPL technology
EZVI Formulations
Emulsified zero-valent iron micelles, available at 10%, 15% or 17% ZVI (4 µm), engineered to draw DNAPL and Freon 113 into a reactive iron core.
SRS®-EZVI combines iron, biodegradable soybean oil, surfactants and water into a stable emulsion particle, or micelle, that contains ZVI particles surrounded by an oil layer. The exterior oil layer shares the hydrophobic properties of chlorinated compounds, so the emulsion attracts DNAPL and pulls it into the interior reactive zone for abiotic degradation, without promoting DNAPL mobilization.
Terra Systems has licensed the EZVI technology from NASA. It is accepted by most state regulators as a qualified product to treat DNAPL and is manufactured with 2 or 4 µm ZVI.
At a glance
DNAPL-attracting
The hydrophobic oil layer draws chlorinated DNAPL into the reactive core rather than mobilizing it.
Dual degradation
Supports both abiotic reduction from the ZVI and biological reductive dechlorination from the oil.
