Restoring Favorable Conditions for Anaerobic Bioremediation in an Acidic Aquifer

At a remediation site in New Jersey, highly acidic groundwater was limiting the effectiveness of anaerobic bioremediation for chlorinated solvents. Terra Systems conducted treatability testing to develop an optimized injection strategy using SRS® emulsified vegetable oil, buffering amendments, and bioaugmentation cultures. The approach successfully restored favorable groundwater conditions, stimulated reductive dechlorination, and demonstrated the value of site-specific testing for improving remediation performance.

Enhancing Reductive Dechlorination in a Fractured Bedrock Aquifer

A chlorinated solvent release in southeastern Pennsylvania’s Brunswick Shalecreated a challenging remediation environment due to fractured bedrock and high groundwater flow. Terra Systems implemented a series of injections using its patented SRS®-FRL emulsified vegetable oil substrate to establish reducing conditions and promote reductive dechlorination across multiple treatment areas. The project demonstrated that, with the proper amendment strategy, effective degradation of TCE to harmless end products can be achieved even under complex hydrogeologic conditions and elevated groundwater velocities.

Treating Mixed Contaminants with a Combined Chemical and Biological Approach

Groundwater at Naval Air Station North Island was impacted by both hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and chlorinated solvents, requiring an integrated remediation strategy. Terra Systems implemented its patented SRS®-M emulsified vegetable oil technology in combination with bioaugmentation to simultaneously reduce chromium and stimulate the reductive dechlorination of TCE. The project demonstrated how a carefully designed treatment approach can effectively address multiple contaminants.
